After going through the Biden administration’s approval process for months, the controversial Willow oil drilling project has been given the go signal by the government. There has been a tremendous increase in online activism against the plan the past week, with a Change.org petition amassing almost four million signatures as of this writing, and more than a million letters sent to the White House.

What is the Willow Project?

The Willow Project is a plan by ConocoPhillips to develop Willow oil field in the National Petroleum Reserve on the North Slope of Alaska. The project aims to drill up to 100 exploratory wells in the field, which is estimated to contain 400-to-750 million barrels of oil. The project encompasses an area that is remote and largely untouched at the moment.

The venture would also involve building new infrastructure, such as roads, pipelines, and processing facilities, to support the drilling activities. The project has been in the planning stages for years, but even after its approval, the date of its launch has yet to be determined and may take years as it faces legal challenges.

Why is the Willow Project controversial?

Online activism against the project has swelled in recent days, and it has become a trending topic with videos bearing hashtags like #StopWillow garnering 50 million views. This is on top of the millions of signatures collected by Change.org, and the letters sent to the White House.

The plan is facing opposition from environmental groups, indigenous communities, and other stakeholders who worry that it will have a negative impact on the environment, particularly on wildlife, water resources, and climate change. They also believe that the project could adversely affect the health and safety of indigenous communities in the region.

What are the benefits of the Willow Project?

The benefits that have cited by supporters of the project are mainly economic. They say that it will help local communities by creating jobs, both temporary and permanent. They add that the project will generate income for both the state and federal governments through increased revenue from oil, gas royalties, and taxes. Proponents have also argued that the project will help reduce the U.S.’ dependence on foreign oil.
