Back in 2016 ‘Manchester by the Sea’ made history as the first film released by a streaming service to pick up a nominee for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Released by Amazon Prime it marked a major step on the road towards streaming platforms becoming major studios in their own rights

A lot has changed in the following seven years and films created by streaming services are now frequently ranked alongside the finest that Hollywood has to offer. Last year ‘CODA’ became the first to win the coveted Oscars Best Picture, secured the top gong for Apple TV+.

But while Apple picked up the top prize last year, Netflix has made headlines in 2023 by picking up 16 nominations for the 95th Oscars.

Those nominees are: ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’; ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’; ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’; ‘The Sea Beast’; ‘Blonde’; ‘Bardo’; ‘The Elephant Whisperers’; and ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’.
