The Republican Party said that it will go ahead with its national convention which will take place this week despite the tragic events that unfolded at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The event, which will culminate in the GOP nominating Donald Trump for a third time on July 18, is being held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin starting Monday.

The apparent assassination attempt on Trump, in which he was grazed by a bullet and two attendees were critically wounded and there was one fatality, has prompted federal, state and local law enforcement officials to heighten security around the convention.

What new security measures are being implemented for RNC convention?

Currently, there is no credible or specific threat according to an joint threat assessment put together by the FBI, US Secret Service, the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee Southeastern Wisconsin Threat Analysis Center. However, to ensure the protection of those attending the Republican National Convention there are plans to expand the perimeter around the Fiserv Forum arena in Downtown Milwaukee.

Additionally, buffer zones will be created around the events according to multiple law enforcement officials who spoke to CBS News’ Nicole Sganga. Furthermore, no boat traffic will be allowed south of the Cherry St Bridge or north of the Michigan St. Bridge on the Milwaukee River. The pedestrian restricted perimeter will be enforced as of 6pm Sunday July 14 and Milwaukee River restrictions were begun at 8am today. Vehicle screening will begin at 2am Monday July 15.
