When is Mardi Gras 2025 in New Orleans? Safety concerns after terrorist attack

On New Year’s Day, a tragic attack occurred on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. A man drove a pickup truck into a large crowd during New Year’s celebrations, resulting in 15 deaths and injuring at least 35 people. The FBI has classified this incident as an act of terrorism.
This attack has prompted serious discussions about security measures for upcoming major events in the city, particularly the Super Bowl LIX and Mardi Gras.
What the government is doing to ensure safety
In response to the attack, Governor Jeff Landry has issued a State of Emergency for Orleans Parish. This declaration allows for the utilization of all available state resources to enhance security measures ahead of both the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated Super Bowl LIX as a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level I, indicating the need for extensive federal, state, and local resources to ensure public safety.
