Puppies are almost universally loved, and one would think there wouldn’t be a need to put aside one day to focus attention on these cuddly creatures.
National Puppy Day: Adopt, don’t shop
However, Puppy Day is not only a time to show appreciation for their cuteness. Colleen Paige, an animal behaviorist and author, founded the holiday in 2006 to encourage people to adopt them from shelters and rescue organizations.
She also wanted to raise awareness about how the animals are mistreated in puppy mills and farms, as well as the importance of spaying and neutering pets to help reduce the number of unwanted litters.
Since it was established, National Puppy Day has become a popular holiday celebrated around the world. It’s a day for people to share photos of their beloved pets on social media, donate to animal shelters and rescue organizations, and raise awareness about the importance of puppy adoption and responsible pet ownership.
