Among the forms of economic aid in the U.S., a notable initiative is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Every month, the scheme helps low-income families to buy groceries.

Although the program is federally funded, the distribution of SNAP benefits is administered at state level. In Texas, payments are handled by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

The funds allotted to each beneficiary are issued to an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, called a Lone Star Card in Texas, which works like a debit card and can be used at approved grocery stores and retailers.

When are SNAP benefits paid out in Texas in August 2026?

There are around three million SNAP beneficiaries in Texas. In order to manage all of the approved payments, the Lone Star State staggers the distribution of benefits throughout each month. A recipient’s payment date is decided by the last digit or the last two digits of their eligibility determination group number, depending on when they were certified. There are three different schedules for SNAP benefits in Texas.

Benefits certified after May 1, 2023, are issued between the 1st and 28th of each month. Benefits certified before May 1, 2023, “keep their existing issuance schedule based on the date benefits were initially certified, unless there is a break in benefits of at least six months and the household reapplies after May 1, 2023,” states HHSC.

Benefits certified after June 1, 2020, but before May 1, 2023, are paid out between the 16th and 28th of each month. Benefits certified before June 1, 2020, are issued over 15 days, beginning on the 1st and based on the last digit in the eligibility determination group number.

The maximum SNAP benefit paid out to an eligible household can depends on the number of people that live in the household. The following amounts went into effect on October 1, 2025, and will be valid through September 2026:

• 3 members: $785
• 4 members: $994
• 5 members: $1,183
• 6 members: $1,421
• 7 members: $1,571
• 8 members: $1,789
• Each additional member: +$218

What can you buy with an EBT card?

Per the USDA, EBT cards can be used at any participating location to purchase household food items, including:

• Fruits and vegetables
• Meat, poultry, and fish
• Dairy products
• Bread and cereals
• Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
• Seeds and plants that produce food for the household

SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase:

• Alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, liquor)
• Tobacco products
• Vitamins, medicines, and supplements
• Live animals
• Hot foods sold at the point of sale
• Non-food items (e.g., cleaning supplies, pet food, paper products).
