The next public holiday in the US is approaching. In total, there are eleven holidays recognized by the federal government that most workers benefit from each year, from New Year’s Day to Christmas. Juneteenth Day is the most recent addition, established as a holiday in 2021.

So far in 2024, five holidays have been celebrated: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, George Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth Day, but what’s next?

Independence Day, the next federal holiday in the USA

The next holiday to be celebrated in the US is Independence Day, which takes place on July 4th each year. Independence Day was officially ratified on June 28, 1870, when Congress decreed July 4 as a federal holiday.

Public Holidays in the US

  • New Year's Day - January 1
  • Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday (Third Monday in January) - January 15, 2024
  • Washington's Birthday or Presidents' Day (third Monday in February) - February 19
  • Memorial Day (last Monday in May) - May 27
  • Juneteenth Day - June 19
  • Independence Day - July 4
  • Labor Day (first Monday in September) - September 2
  • Columbus Day (Second Monday in October) - October 14
  • Veterans Day or Veterans Day - November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November): November 28
  • Christmas Day - December 25

When July 4 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is celebrated on the preceding Friday, and when it falls on a Sunday, it is moved to the following Monday. This celebration began in 1776 when representatives of the thirteen former British colonies signed the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, officially declaring themselves as an independent nation.

How is Independence Day celebrated?

The 4th of July is celebrated with fireworks, ceremonies, speeches, parades, and concerts, among other activities. Americans also have family gatherings and barbecues. Many retailers also take the opportunity to offer great discounts.

Do you work during this holiday?

By law, federal offices are closed during certain holidays. This means that government employees have the day off and receive their pay. However, each individual establishment decides whether other establishments, such as companies, banks, and supermarkets, are close or not.

Typically, on Independence Day, banks, post offices, stock exchanges, and schools are closed, while pharmacies and restaurants remain open. Some supermarkets, like Costco, are open.
