A Trump campaign dossier on the former president’s running mate was leaked online just days before Ohio Senator JD Vance is set to debate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in the singular vice presidential debate. The over 200-page document meticulously describes comments made by Senator Vance that could damage the campaign. Divided by sections that include “DURING THE 2016 CAMPAIGN, VANCE INDICATED HE BELIEVED THE WOMEN WHO ACCUSED TRUMP OF SEXUAL ASSAULT” and “VANCE HAS PREVIOUSLY TAKEN POSITIONS THAT UNDERMINE THE RELIGIOUS-RIGHT” the document provides quotes by the Ohio leader that political opponents could use to attack the Republican ticket.

Independent journalist Ken Kippenstein, whose account was later suspended, published the dossier on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The dossier has yet to be picked up and reported on by major outlets, and with all of its contents being comprised of public information, it remains to be seen how damaging it will be for the Republican ticket. However, it does raise questions about why the campaign went with Senator Vance after the dossier was put together.

When was JD Vance elected to the Senate?

Before getting into politics, JD Vance was best known for his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.”

He was elected to the US Senate in 2022, beating Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan. While Senator Vance won by more than six percent, his margin was much smaller than that of Republican Governor Mike DeWine, who beat Democrat and former Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley by more than twenty-four points. Vance ran on a more extreme platform than the incumbent governor, and by the looks of the results, it may cost him votes.

If elected in November, he will have had one of the shortest political careers before serving as vice president in recent memory. Though Kamala Harris had not yet completed one term as a senator when selected as Joe Biden’s running mate, she had served in California as Attorney General and District Attorney of San Francisco.

When is the vice presidential debate?

The debate will be hosted by CBS on Tuesday, October 1, at 9:00 pm ET/6:00 pm PT.

The debate may be the last opportunity both campaigns have to address an audience of millions since former President Donald Trump has rejected invites from various networks to participate in another debate.
