When will Daylight Savings time be permanent? Congress approves Sunshine Protection Act

Update:

Americans may have changed the hour on their clocks for the last time this past spring. The House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act 308 to 117, which would stop the practice of switching to Daylight Savings in the spring and then back to Standard Time in the fall.

The legislation establishes Day Light Savings as the permanent setting for clocks across the country. There is a cutout for states like Hawaii and most of Arizona which currently use standard time all year round.

When will Daylight Savings time be permanent?

The legislation will now go over to the Senate where Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington has called for a vote on the bill “as soon as possible.” She was one of the leading voices when the Senate passed similar legislation in 2022 but the House never took it up for a vote.

While President Donald Trump has changed his position on whether the United States should use Daylight Savings or Standard Time, he has said that he would sign the bill if it makes it to his desk. If that occurs before Sunday, November 1, 2026, then Americans will finally be able to say goodbye to the twice-yearly time changes and all the disruption they bring.
