When will Instagram launch its Twitter rival? How will it work?
Meta, looking to take advantage of the discontent that has arisen from Musk’s changes to Twitter, is testing a rival that could launch as soon as June.
While getting a late start in the game, Meta is testing a Twitter clone platform to enter the text-based microblogging arena. Zuckerberg’s parent company of Instagram is looking to integrate the alternate social media format, currently codenamed, P92 (Project 92) or Barcelona, with the photo and video sharing social networking service as well as making it decentralized and compatible with other apps like Mastodon.
The parent company of Facebook has been contacting talent agencies and celebrities to gauge their interest in trying an early version of the app. Meta is hoping to use its advantage in the social media market with billions of users across its family of apps, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger, to rival the beleaguered Twitter.
When will Instagram launch its Twitter rival? How will it work?
It’s been reported that the new platform, which will be partially integrated with Instagram, will be available to the public sometime in late June. According to a newsletter by Lia Haberman, who teaches social and influencer marketing at UCLA in California, users of the “Instagram for your thoughts” will be able to carry over their Instagram verification and handle.
When Project 92 is officially launched, users will also have a single sign-on password which will carry over from their Instagram account as well as two-factor authentication. They will also be able to sync their existing followers to the new yet-to-be-named platform and send them a notification automatically. Likewise, any accounts that they have blocked will remain so on the new Twitter rival along with hidden words. The same community guidelines as Instagram will be used by the new app.
The cross between Instagram and Twitter will allow users to text posts up to 500 characters, and upload photos, links and videos up to five minutes long. And as with all similar apps, people can like, reply or repost content.
Haberman’s sources say that there is currently no set plan for monetization being shared. So does this mean no ads to start? That maybe so, “in which case, expect the emphasis to be on an organic social strategy.”
