When will the Golden Globes nominees be announced?

Hollywood is still recovering from the pandemic, but it seems that the Golden Globes will return to their former glory this year... not all are pleased.

The Golden Globes will be back in a more familiar format in January 2023, with NBC committing to broadcast the event. Last year, the network participated in a boycott of the ceremony. With very few guests and no broadcast, the results were shared via Twitter - a far less ceremonious occasion than what is traditionally seen. The boycott was based on reporting from the Los Angeles Times that documented a continued legacy of racism within the organization that had led to a serious diversity issue.

When the return to NBC was announced, Frances Berwick, Chairman, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television, and Streaming, said that the network recognizes the “HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80.”

In July, the organization made significant changes to its structure to modernize and increase “the size and diversity of the available voters for the annual awards.”

When will the nominations be announced?

The HFPA plans to announce the nominees on Monday, Dec. 12, around a month before the event. Getting a glimpse of the nominees is often a preview for Oscar season since films are frequently nominated for both.

Which films are likely to be nominated?

Already film buffs are making their predictions about which movies released over the last year will receive a nomination. Some likely contenders include All Quiet On The Western Front, Avatar: The Way Of Water, Empire Of Light, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Nope.

For guidance on what shows have a fighting chance at the Golden Globes, we can look to the Emmys, which occurred a little earlier this month. For Best Drama, it would seem that ‘Succession,’ ‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘The Crowne,’ ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ On the funnier side, Best Comedy could go to ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘Insecure’, or ‘Dead to Me.’

Hollywood struggles to recover from the pandemic

This year, particularly on the film side, many may feel that they have not seen as many of the contenders. With movies being released across streaming platforms, viewers have to have multiple accounts to access all the films nominated. Additionally, with ticket sales at movie theaters way down, fewer films are choosing to screen across the country.

Since the pandemic, the film industry has seen significant disruption to profits. With many movies going directly to streaming, revenue from a lack of ticket sales for the theater has left Hollywood with fewer resources. Many producers are unlikely to take on high-risk movies that may not attract a broad audience. This means that remarks and sequels will likely be much more popular in the coming years as they are a much safer bet than new projects.
