What is the expected date of the verdict in the Johnny Depp v Amber Heard trial?

The trial ended Friday May 27, as the legal teams for both sides rested their cases and the jury was released to begin their deliberations. But the verdict isn’t expected until the last day of May or the start of June due to the amount of evidence that has been given.

Last Friday May 27 the jury started deliberation in the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation case. Soon we should expect a veredict that will bring this trial to and end. However, it seems that we will still have to wait a few more days. Judge Penny Azcarate sent the jurors home for Memorial Day holiday weekend, so deliberations are set to resume Tuesday May 31 at 9:00 ET. There is no exact date for the veredict to come out, but the because of the large number of testimonies presented in the last weeks we may have to be little patient.

For more than a month now, both Depp and Heard have been batteling in court, but now we may be very close to a conclusion. Since April 11 we have witnessed a very public airing of their dirty laundry, but now time is up and both only have to hope that they have convinced the jury of their argument.

The trial was initially scheduled to end on Thursday May 19. However, with significant evidence yet to be considered extra time was given to ensure the jury would be in full appreciation of the information they have been given.

The new end date for the trial was May 27, but on Thursday May 26 both sides rested their cases. This won’t be the end of proceedings, as the jury will still need to give their verdict on whether Heard did defame Depp in her Washington Post article.

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million, saying she defamed him when she claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse. Heard has countersued for $100 million, arguing that Depp smeared her by calling her a liar. Both parties have completed their testimonies.

What has happened in the trial this week?

Attorneys for Johnny Depp have attempted to discredit Amber Heard’s abuse claims in the former couple’s defamation trial on Tuesday, introducing a knife she gave as a gift to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star and affectionate notes she wrote to him.

At the start of Tuesday’s proceedings, lawyer Camille Vasquez asked jurors to examine the knife Heard bought for Depp in 2012. Heard had testified that Depp had already become violent toward her by that time.

“This is the knife you gave to the man who would get drunk and violent toward you?” the lawyer asked. “This is the knife I gave him as a present, yes,” she said, adding that she did not think he would stab her with it.

Depp has testified that he never hit Heard and argued that she was the abuser in their relationship. He said she threw a vodka bottle at him in early 2015, severing the top of his right middle finger.

Heard said she did not cause the finger injury and said she only hit him to defend herself or her sister.

The trial continues.
