Update:

After nearly a week on the run, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, has been arrested after being identified by a McDonald’s worker in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Very little is known about the details law enforcement authorities had while conducting their investigation. For instance, they may have figured out the shooter’s name but did not release it to the public for fear of startling the suspect or over fears of being overwhelmed by the number of tips they might receive. This does not mean that the agencies weren’t working with the Department of Transportation, airports, and airlines to flag him in case he tried to board a flight out of the country while authorities attempted to find him.

While some conspiracies suggested that the suspect may have fled the country, it turns out he was just one state over. At this point, officials leading the investigation believe the suspect acted alone. No plans for further killings have been made public, though key details about the 26-year-old indicate he was angered by the power held by corporations in the United States.

Where did Mangione go to college?

Mangione is from Towson, Maryland, which is around 50 miles outside of Washington, D.C. He studied computer science at the University of Pennsylvania. The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university’s student-run press, noted that he graduated in 2020. During his time at the Ivy League institution, he founded the Game Research and Development Environment. As a computer science major, the group, also referred to as UPGRADE, aimed to “foster creative expression and cultivate career skills for the artists, programmers, and creatives interested in game development in the Penn community.”
