Built and operated by the Creationist group, Answers in Genisis, the Ark Encounter claims to present what life could’ve been like for Noah and his family inside a massive replica of the Ark. Touted as the “largest timber-frame structure in the world” the vessel was constructed using measurements laid out in Genisis, the creation story from the Bible.

The Ark Encounter stands over 50 feet tall and is 510 feet in length. Inside visitors can roam the three levels to experience through numerous exhibits the immense scale of the undertaking of saving all land-dwelling, air-breathing animals during the Great Flood. The part tourist attraction and part explanation of how the world as we know it came to be according to Creationist theory lays out their interpretation of flood geology and post-flood events.

The Ark Encounter is located in northern Kentucky among the rolling hills of Grant County. Specifically, it is located right off exit 154 in Williamstown, which is halfway between Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky.

The Answers in Genisis sister biblical tourist attraction, the Creation Museum, is 40 miles away, located just west of Cincinnati.

What is there to see at the Ark Encounter?

If you plan to visit the Ark Encounter bring a pair of walking shoes, a good pair, and a lot of energy. It takes around 3 to 4 hours to walk through all of the exhibits inside the massive replica of Noah’s Ark.

The structure consists of three “decks” with each one dedicated to part of the biblical tale of Noah’s Ark and Genisis. Visitors enter the vessel through the ground floor and then take a ramp going up the exterior to Deck 1.

There guests are immersed “in the size and scope of the biblical ark as visitors walk through a storage area and learn about animal kinds.” Then they can proceed to Deck 2 which “focuses on the pre-flood world, animal concerns, and an exploration of Noah and how God could have prepared him for his monumental task.”

After taking another ramp up to Deck 3, visitors can see exhibits that present “plausible living quarters for Noah and his family.” Additionally, displays lay out how the world we know today came to be according to Creationist theories. Creationism is the belief that what is told in the Bible is the true history of the world and together with the universe were created at the same time around 6,000 years ago.

Visitors to the Ark Encounter can also take in speaker presentations and concerts. There are also hands-on activities and a small zoo on the grounds. The biblical tourist attraction’s webpage says that “some of these activities are an additional cost, but many are absolutely free with your Ark admission.”
