Long-time Apple users who owned the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus could be entitled to up to $349 in compensation after Apple agreed to pay out $35 million as part of a class-action lawsuit filed in 2019 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The lawsuit stemmed from a number of the aforementioned iPhones allegedly experiencing audio issues, specifically related to the audio IC chip, which controls how sound comes out of the phone.

Apple denied that the devices were affected by such issues, and also denied all allegations of wrongdoing, but has nevertheless agreed to the pay-out, which users can claim provided they meet certain conditions.

What conditions must be met to qualify for the Apple settlement?

Compensation could be on its way to those who owned either an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus between 16 September 2016 and 3 January 2023. However, Apple must have registered your complaints about the audio issue, or other issues covered by the settlement.

The “covered issues” are reflected in Apple’s records as:

  • Sound-Speaker
  • Sound-Microphone
  • Sound – Receiver
  • Unexpected Restart / Shutdown
  • Power On – Device Unresponsive

Users who paid Apple for a repair or replacement phone as a result of any of the above issues also qualify, and will be entitled to greater compensation.

Anyone who complained about the issue will be entitled to up to $125 in compensation, while a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $349 could be coming your way if you paid for a repair or replacement.

What do I need to do to get compensation?

People whose complaints were registered by Apple or who paid for a repair or replacement are considered class members and part of the settlement class, which means they should have been - or will be - notified by email or by post they qualify for compensation.

Class members have until Monday 3 June to either submit payment information or choose to opt out of the lawsuit. There is more information about how to do that on the settlement website.

Anyone who thinks they qualify for the settlement but hasn’t been notified, or anyone who is unsure as to whether or not they qualify for compensation, can call 1-833-633-0343 for more information.
