Which cellphone carriers are reporting the greatest number of outages?
Cellphone companies report massive outages nationwide as people begin their day. Which companies have seen the greatest disruptions?
People across the United States are waking up this morning with cell phones that serve as little more than a glorified alarm clock, with all major telecommunications companies reporting massive outages. It has been hours since the outages were initially reported, and very little information has still been released on what has caused the cellular networks to fail.
Carriers seeing the greatest number of outage reports
AT&T customers have reported the most disruptions in mobile service, followed by Cricket Wireless, Verizon, and T-Mobile.
Cricket Wireless, a low-cost cellular carrier, has seen more than 13,000 reports, with two-thirds reporting no signal on their device. The fact that Cricket is the second most affected carrier is unsurprising since its parent company is AT&T, and the two may share cellular infrastructure.
Verizon and T-Mobile, which are AT&T’s most significant competitors, are also seeing outages, but less than 5,000 reports have been submitted to Down Detector over the last twenty-four hours. For AT&T this figure is over 70,000.
Where are the outages taking place?
Down Detector is an excellent resource for tracking outages of cellular networks, mobile applications, and other platforms. The website publishes a heat calendar, which helps to show where more reports have been filed.
The site has said that AT&T customers in Houston, Chicago, Dallas, San Antonio, Atlanta, New York City, Austin, Miami, and Indianapolis have submitted the highest reports. This list is very similar to that of T-Mobile, with the only difference being the addition of Los Angeles instead of Austin.
Verizon customers in Chicago, New York City, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Indianapolis, and Brooklyn took the top spots.
