Harsh weather has been battering the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, bringing powerful winds and hail to various cities. Some areas are experiencing heavy downpours which are bringing threats of flash floods.

The most severe storms will bring wind gusts of up to 70 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, or roughly the size of ping pong balls.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of the following areas. The watch will be in place until 10 p.m. ET.

  • District Of Columbia
  • Delaware
  • Central and Eastern Maryland
  • New Jersey
  • Southeast New York
  • Eastern Pennsylvania
  • Northern Virginia
  • Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia
  • Coastal Waters

The advisory indicates the presence of primary threats that include scattered damaging wind gusts and isolated hail events.

According to the weather center, scattered thunderstorms will widen across the regions currently affected. The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 85 statute miles east and west of a line from 55 miles east of Charlottesville, Virginia, to 40 miles east northeast of Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania.

What does a Severe Thunderstorm Watch mean?

This warning indicates that residents should take precautionary measures because conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.

Those who live in these areas should be on the lookout and prepared for threatening weather conditions.

Residents are also advised to keep themselves posted for later statements and possible warnings. People must keep in mind that severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.

Fierce storms are expected to end by late this evening, but people are also warned that the areas affected may also face severe weather on Monday.
