OSCARS 2023

Which movies are favourites to win at the 2023 Academy Awards?

The nominees have just been released giving film fans their first look at the best films and performances over the last year.

Update:
Premios Oscar 2023: Actores que recibieron su primera nominación en la historia

The run up to the end of the American film awards season begins as the Oscars nomination list was revealed on Tuesday morning. A number of films have been awarded nine or more nominations with ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ leading with 11 nods, followed by ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ with nine-apiece.

Each of the nominated films will be voted on by the roughly 10,000 actors, producers and directors who make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They get to a new ballot to choose each of the categories from the nominations with the winners revealed on 12 March, 2023.

So which films will win some of the biggest prizes?

Best Picture

There are 10 best picture nominations, the same as last year. ‘Elvis’, ‘Tár’, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and ‘The Fabelmans’ were all expected to be on the list, which they are, but the largest contender looks to be ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’. It was released well outside the traditional ‘Oscar-bait’ time-frame, coming out in the Summer of 2022.

Best Director nominees

The Best Director slot is more condensed than the Best Picture, with six up to win, but the same names return. Though the difference may sound similar for both categories there has actually been a low amount of films that accomplished both awards since 2010. Two directors have already won awards this season, Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) at the Golden Globes and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once) at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

If ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ wins Best Picture then perhaps Spielberg will pick up the director award which would be his third.

Best Actress nominees

Topping the list to win an Oscar this year are Cate Blanchett (Tár) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), both of whom won a Golden Globe in the category. Blanchett also took home the award at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Best Actor nominees

Austin Butler, Colin Farrell and Brendan Fraser are the favourites for the 2023 Best Actor award according to the odds. The first two both won Golden Globe Awards for their performances in ‘Elvis’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ respectively. However, the Critics’ Choice Awards gave Best Actor to Fraser for his role in ‘The Whale’.

There has been a lot of buzz on the internet in support of Brendan Fraser after his acting return.
