Which parts of the US will see snow on Thanksgiving? Holiday forecast for November 28
Though it is early, some organizations are releasing forecasts for the areas of the country that could see snow on Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Day is approaching. For years, Thanksgiving Day was celebrated on different days. It wasn’t until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as National Thanksgiving Day.
However, it took 78 years for Congress to finally decree this day as a legal holiday and institute it on the fourth Thursday of November. Taking this into account, this 2024 Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated on November 28.
It is still a bit early to determine which areas might see snow. Still, the National Weather Service’s longer-term precipitation forecasts show that a few regions have a higher chance of seeing rain or snow on the beloved holiday. Some areas where the chance of precipitation is higher include parts of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as parts of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Those traveling through these areas might want to keep track of the weather report in case there are storms that could cause delays.
Will it snow on Thanksgiving? Here’s the weather forecast
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has released a weather map detailing the conditions families can expect on Thanksgiving Day across the United States. The forecast indicates that most of the country will experience a warmer-than-normal fall.
According to the map, residents in the central states—such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and parts of northern Texas and Oklahoma—will likely see higher temperatures. In contrast, southern Texas and the country’s southeastern region can anticipate some rainfall.
The southwestern states, including California and Arizona, are expected to have dry and sunny weather. Meanwhile, the northwest is forecasted to encounter rain during the week of Thanksgiving.
For those in the Rocky Mountains and other northern areas, some snowfall may indicate slightly more wintry conditions.
Thanksgiving Day: Are banks, post offices and supermarkets open?
Because the United States government recognizes Thanksgiving Day as an official holiday, government offices, banks, schools, the stock exchange, post offices, as well as some private sector businesses are closed.
On the other hand, on Thanksgiving Day, most major supermarkets, including Walmart and Costco, operate on shorter hours or close their stores, so we recommend you do your shopping in advance.
As for restaurants and food options, most remain open on Thanksgiving Day, and offer special menus for the holiday. However, certain establishments choose to close, so we recommend checking with your nearest restaurant to make sure of their hours.
