The Fourth of July is a time of celebration and joy, marked by fireworks, family gatherings, and patriotic fervor. However, beneath the festive atmosphere the roads become much more dangerous, with an increased risk of accidents and fatalities.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts a record number of people on the road, 71 million in total. With millions of Americans taking to the highways to travel to their destinations, the risk of a tragic accident skyrockets.

According to a recent study by Omega Law Group, South Dakota is the most dangerous state for drivers during Independence Day, with a staggering 244% increase in accidents compared to an average day in July. The District of Columbia follows closely, with a 182% increase in accidents on 4 July.

The study analysed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System from 2017 to 2021, looking at the total fatal accidents on the roads during each of the twelve main US holidays.

Vermont ranks third, with a 145% increase in accidents , followed by New Hampshire with a 118% increase. Connecticut rounds out the top five, with a 99% increase. Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Delaware, and Nevada complete the top ten most dangerous states for driving during the Fourth of July.

Why the fourth of July is so dangerous on the road

Holidays greatly increase road traffic as well as the likelihood of accidents due to factors such as drunk driving, speeding, and distracted driving.

“Many holidays involve celebrations where alcohol consumption is common, particularly New Year’s Eve, Fourth of July, Memorial Day,” said a spokesperson for Omega Law Group. “Unfortunately, those who choose to drink and then drive are the ones increasing the risk of accidents.
