On Sunday evening the great and the good of the television industry will gather for the 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The ceremony is considered the pinnacle of TV awards and recognises the finest shows and series to have been released in the previous 12 months.

Previous winners include some of the biggest and most popular shows of all time, but which programmes have picked up the most Emmy Awards in total?

When it comes to the all-time rankings two shows, Saturday Night Live and Game of Thrones, stand alone at the top of the leader board. We take a look at the top five most successful shows in the Emmy Awards…

#5 The Mary Tyler Moore Show

In terms of the most productive shows at the Emmys, few can beat the incredible record held by The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The show won 29 of its 67 Emmy Award nominations, doing so across just seven seasons.

#4 The Simpsons

By far the most successful animated show at the Emmys is beloved cartoon The Simpsons, which has notched up an incredible 30 seasons at time of writing. In the course of that it’s managed 35 wins and could add to that total after picking up another nomination for this year’s ceremony.

#3 Frasier

Classic ‘80s sitcom Cheers won a very successful 28 Emmys, just missing out on the top five, in its 11 seasons. But it was the spin-off show, Frasier, which really won plaudits at the Emmy Awards. The programme is the most successful comedy programme in the history of the Emmys and boasts 37 award wins after picking up six in its final season.

#2 Game of Thrones

There is a considerable jump to the top two but narrowly missing out on top spot is mythical drama is Game of Thrones, which has notched 59 Emmy Award wins. Helped in part by numerous victories in the technical categories, the show remained one of the most-watched TV shows throughout its eight-season run, despite a controversial finale.

It’s prequel, House of the Dragon, will be judged in next year’s awards due to being released after the window to submit series for the awards. Look out for it next year.

#1 Saturday Night Live

One of the most popular and instantly recognisable shows on television is the sketch-comedy classic, Saturday Night Live. The iconic programme has been running since 1975 and has picked up an astonishing 306 nominations in that time. Prior to the 2022 edition, SNL had picked up 92 wins and remains the undisputable king of the Emmys.
