The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 2023 Oscars and some surprise picks meant some major snubs for the coveted award. The 95th Academy Awards will take place at Ovation Hollywood, the renamed Dolby Theatre, in Los Angeles, California on 12 March 2023 at 8 pm ET.

The premier awards event in world cinema will be hosted once again by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, this will be his third time as emcee. Here’s a look at who got nominated and who was looked over for the 95th Academy Awards.

Best Picture

  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Elvis
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • The Fabelmans
  • Tár
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • Women Talking

The voters deciding which films would compete in the field of ten for Best Picture had no easy task this year with several stand out contenders. While the potential movies in the running had to be whittled down the final list was comprised of those the critics had expected with one major exception.

‘Triangle of Sadness’ seemingly came out of nowhere to make it into the list of ten contenders. However, this meant that other films like ‘Babylon’, ‘The Whale’ and ‘Glass Onion’ wouldn’t make the cut. As well ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ was snubbed but adding it to the list which has two other major blockbuster films might have been a bit much. Likewise, ‘The Woman King’ got snubbed in more than just the Best Picture category.

Best Actor

  • Austin Butler - Elvis
  • Brendan Fraser - The Whale
  • Paul Mescal - Aftersun
  • Bill Nighy - Living
  • Colin Farrell - The Banshees of Inisherin

While Tom Cruise gave a great performance in the sequel to ‘Top Gun’, for many his role as Maverick wasn’t expected to get him a nod this year. Hugh Jackman was on some Bingo cards but there could only be five.

Best Actress

  • Cate Blanchett - Tár
  • Ana de Armas - Blonde
  • Andrea Riseborough - To Leslie
  • Michelle Williams - The Fabelmans
  • Michelle Yeoh - Everything Everywhere All at Once

And then there were five, but not exactly who was expected. This year the hype is that it’s a two pony race between Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh for the Best Actress award, so it came as no surprise that they made the cut.

However, while Michelle Williams made the list of five two others were surprise announcements, Ana de Armas and Andrea Riseborough. That meant though that Danielle Deadwyler got snubbed for her spectacular performance in ‘Till’ as well as Viola Davis for hers in ‘The Woman King’ which was completely looked over for the 2023 Oscars.

Best Director

  • Martin McDonagh - The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert - Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Steven Spielberg - The Fabelmans
  • Todd Field - Tár
  • Ruben Östlund - Triangle of Sadness

The biggest snub of the 2023 Oscars was of women directors. After two years in a row of female directors taking the top prize the Academy voters decided to make it an all male affair this year despite strong contenders such as Sarah Polley for ‘Women Talking’, among others, which was given a nod for Best Picture.

James Cameron was also overlooked for his awe-inspiring sequel ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’. Instead, the Academy nominated Ruben Östlund for ‘Triangle of Sadness’.

Oscar 2023 nominations

The Academy announced the nominations for all 23 categories today. Judges will take the next seven weeks until the glitziest ceremony in Hollywood takes place on 12 March 2023 to make up their minds. However, some favorites are already expected to win, but there can always be a surprise.
