Sheinbaum is a former mayor of Mexico City and a climate scientist. She has extensive experience in both the fields of science and politics.

Who is Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first woman president?

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo was born in Mexico City on 24 June 1962. She is the second daughter of a family of scientists: her father, Carlos, a chemist, and her mother, Annie, a biologist. Both were involved in the Mexican student movement in 1968.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s academic background

Sheinbaum attended high school at the College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH), Plantel Sur. She later studied Physics at the Faculty of Science and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she graduated in 1989. She earned a master’s in Energy Engineering from the prestigious UNAM.

In 1995, she became the first woman to enter and obtain a doctorate at the UNAM Faculty of Engineering. Her doctoral thesis, “Trends and perspectives of residential energy in Mexico,” showcased her deep understanding of the country’s energy landscape.

In 1995, Sheinbaum moved to California for four years on a UNAM scholarship to pursue a doctorate at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. That same year, she joined the academic staff of the Engineering Institute. Sheinbaum has also held other high-level positions over the years, collaborating with government agencies and international organizations:

  • graduate of the Advanced Studies Program in Sustainable Development and Environment.
  • graduated from the Advanced Studies Program in Sustainable Development at El Colegio de México.
  • a member of the National System of Researchers.
  • a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.
  • she was an advisor to the National Commission for Energy Saving.
  • she was an advisor to the Economic Studies Management of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
  • she was part of the UN Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Climate Change in 2007

Political career of Claudia Sheinbaum

Her journey in public service began in 2000 when she assumed the role of Secretary of the Environment of the Federal District. In 2006, she boldly resigned from her position to join Andrés López Obrador’s presidential campaign as his spokesperson. She then took on the role of Secretary of Defense of the National Heritage under Obrador’s leadership.

Her dedication to public service is further exemplified by her coordination of the Movement in Defense of Petroleum, where she led the formation of protest brigades called “Adelitas” in response to the short time for legislation and debate on energy reform.

Sheinbaum’s political career is a testament to her leadership and dedication. 2015, she broke barriers by becoming the first woman elected to lead the Tlalpan mayor’s office. Her achievements continued to soar, and by July 2018, she made history again as the first woman to hold the position of Head of Government of Mexico City, leading the “Together We Will Make History” coalition.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s personal life

Sheinbaum is married to financial risk analyst Jesús María Tarriba Unger, whom she wed in November last year. They met in college and had been dating since 2016. She was previously married to politician and academic Carlos Imaz Gispert from 1987 to 2016. They have a daughter who was born in 1988, and Sheinbaum also became the stepmother to Imaz’s son from a previous marriage.
