Who is Eileen Higgins, the next mayor of Miami?
Eileen Higgins will be the first woman in Miami’s history to become mayor.
Eileen Higgins made history in Miami, Florida, by winning the mayoral runoff election. She will become the city’s first female mayor, and her victory marks the first Democratic win in nearly 30 years.
“Together, we left behind years of chaos and corruption and opened the door to a new era for our city, defined by ethical and responsible leadership that delivers tangible results for the people. I am deeply honoured by the trust voters have placed in me to serve as the next mayor of Miami,” Higgins wrote on social media.
“This victory belongs to every resident who knocked on doors, collected petitions, made phone calls, and believed that integrity and hard work could triumph over traditional politics. Tonight, we celebrate not just a victory, but a new beginning for Miami: a city that belongs to all of us and a future we will build together,” she added.
Higgins faced Republican Emilio Gonzalez, a former member of the Florida Defense Support Commission and the Florida Treasury Investment Council. Gonzalez called Higgins to congratulate her and wish her well in her term.
Higgins, 61, previously served as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner. She was first elected to the position in 2018 but resigned this year to run for mayor. In 2022, she had planned to run for Florida’s 27th congressional district but withdrew to avoid a primary against the eventual Democratic nominee, Annette Taddeo.
“As a county commissioner representing much of the City of Miami, Eileen has led with integrity, experience, and a focus on delivering real results. She has built thousands of affordable housing units, invested millions to strengthen hundreds of small businesses, expanded public transportation options, and created green spaces for families to enjoy,” her campaign stated.

As mayor, Higgins’s main objectives are to restore trust in the city council and remove the red tape that “prevents homeowners and small businesses from thriving.” She also aims to promote safe neighbourhoods, improve parks and transportation, invest in flood prevention measures, and increase the availability of affordable housing.
