Who is George Stephanopoulos, the journalist interviewing Joe Biden on July 5?

After President Joe Biden’s highly criticized performance at the first presidential debate against Donald Trump, he will give his first interview to convince voters that he’s up to the task of leading the country.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos will be conducting the interview, the first part of which will air on the network on Friday evening.

Stephanopoulos currently co-hosts “Good Morning America” and anchors his own show, “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”, ABC’s Sunday morning public affairs program, which involves in-depth interviews with politicians and analysis of current events.

Who is George Stephanopoulos, the journalist interviewing Joe Biden on July 5?

Born on February 10, 1961 in Fall River, Massachusetts, George Robert Stephanopoulos graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Columbia University in 1982, and later received a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University, where he earned a Master of Arts in Theology.

Before embarking on a career in journalism, Stephanopoulos established a track record in the field of politics. He worked on several political campaigns and served as an aide to various politicians before becoming widely recognized for his role as a senior advisor to President Bill Clinton.

Stephanopoulos was one of the key strategists during Clinton’s 1992 presidential bid. After Clinton became president, the advisor first served as the White House Communications Director, and later as a Senior Advisor for Policy and Strategy.

When his stint with the White House was over, Stephanopoulos shifted careers and became a journalist for ABC News in 1997.

From politics to journalism

The 63-year-old has hosted his solo show “This Week” since 2002, an has been an anchor of “Good Morning America” since 2009. He was also designated by the network as ABC News Chief Anchor, a role in which he leads the network’s coverage of breaking news and major events.

Stephanopoulos’ background in politics both academically and through experience gives him a deeper perspective in his reporting and analysis. His political know-how helps bridge the gap between political insiders and the general public.
