Donald Trump introduced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, and as the vice-presidential candidate walked onto the floor, he was accompanied by his wife, Usha Vance.

As Vance marked the beginning of his high-profile campaign, his wife automatically became the subject of scrutiny.

The Indian American lawyer is seen as representing diversity and change within the GOP. Vance has spoken highly of his wife in past interviews, saying that she has played a vital role in his career.

Who is Usha Vance? All you need to know about the Trump’s running mate’s wife

Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was raised in San Diego, California. Her mother Lakshmi Chilukuri is a biologist and college provost, while her father Krish Chilukuri is an engineer. Vance was raised in the religion of her parents, who are both Hindu.

She went to Yale University, where she completed her undergraduate studies. She then obtained her Master’s Degree in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge on the Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

Usha then went back to Yale to pursue a law degree, assuming editorial roles at the Yale Law Journal and the Yale Journal of Law & Technology. She met J.D. Vance in law school, where they began their relationship as they worked on a class project when they were assigned as partners.

Usha Vance: Life after Yale

J.D. and Usha and got married in an interfaith ceremony in 2014, a year after they graduated from Yale Law School. They share three children: six-year-old Ewan, four-year-old Vivek, and two-year old Mirabel.

Usha has clerked for prominent judicial figures, including Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Judge Brett Kavanaugh when he was on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Trump later nominated Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

After her clerkships, Usha Vance worked as a trial lawyer for the firm Munger, Tolles, & Olson and eventually became an associate. She has left the law firm to support her husband’s candidacy.

According to public records, Usha was a registered Democrat who participated in primaries in 2014, but cast her vote in the 2022 Republican primary when her husband ran for the Ohio senate.
