Second gentleman Doug Emhoff has admitted to having an affair years ago during his first marriage to Kerstin Emhoff. He said his actions took a toll on his marriage and eventually played a part in its breakup.
In a statement first reported by CNN, the first gentleman said he has since taken responsibility and worked through things with his family.
He made the statement after tabloid reports regarding the affair came out.
Emhoff’s ex-wife Kerstin has also come out with a statement expressing support for him after his admission.
“Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago,” she said.
“He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together.”
