Who were the two National Guard members shot near the White House?

Two members of the West Virginia national guard were shot near the White House on Wednesday.
The attack took place shortly before 3pm local time on Wednesday afternoon, near the Farragut West metro station. Emergency vehicles were soon in the area and Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) wrote on X: “MPD is on the scene of a shooting at 17th and I Street, NW. Please avoid the area. Updates to come.“
Early reports suggest that two members of the National Guard were shot but their condition remains unclear, with West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey walking back an initial post claiming that they had been killed.

Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.
“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” Morrisey wrote on X.
Officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the two victims and are unlikely to do so until their condition is known. The shooter is also thought to have been wounded in the incident.
The National Guard deployment in Washington has been deeply controversial, with more than 2,000 troops currently stationed in the city. The deployment was ordered by the Trump White House as part of a nationwide effort to cut crime in cities.
