The value of payments was boosted by the 3.2 percent Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), as well as the higher average salaries of retirees who began claiming benefits over the last year. While the average payment is just over $1,900, most beneficiaries do not receive a check this size. In 2022, the median check size was $1,590, with only those in the highest quartile receiving payments over $1,900.
