Why there could be a double SSI payment in May

The reason why two payments will be made to Supplemental Security Income recipients in May.

Social Security: Who will receive $914 on December 1?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive two payments in May. Why? Well, the reason has to do with the payment schedule established by the Social Security Adminstration (SSA). SSI benefits are paid on the first of the month, but when the first falls on a holiday or weekend, they are paid on the previous working day. While in May, the first lands on a Wednesday, the first of June falls on a Saturday, meaning that the June payment will be sent on Friday, 31 May. In August and in November, two payments will also be received by SSI beneficiaries for the same reason.

SSI Payment Schedule 2024

  • May: Wednesday, 1 May 2024
  • June: Friday, 31 May 2024
  • July: Monday, 1 July 2024
  • August: Thursday, 1 August 2024
  • September: Friday, 30 August 2024
  • October: Tuesday, 1 October 2024
  • November: Friday, 1 November 2024
  • December: Friday, 29 November 2024

How many people receive SSI benefits?

A total of 7.4 million people received SSI benefits in March 2024, with over half being older than eighteen but younger than sixty-four.

Average payments by age in March 2024

  • Under 18: $821.38
  • 18-64: $744.1
  • 65 and older: $574.89

The payments for seniors are lower than those distributed to other age groups because many beneficiaries are also eligible to receive Social Security benefits.

How much have SSI benefits increased in value over the last year?

Since March 2023, the value of SSI benefits has increased on average three percent, but there are differences among the different age groups. SSI benefits for those under 18 have risen 2.1 percent since last year, with those for recipients between 18 and 64 increasing 3.4 percent. For those 65 and older, the value has surged 3.8 percent.
