A man in Maryland has accused his local Chick-fil-A of racism after he saw his to-go order had been labeled with the word “Monkeys” instead of his name.

A man in Maryland has shared his experience of what he called an incident of racism at his local Chick-fil-A, when he found that his to-go order had been labeled with the word “Monkeys”, instead of his name, “Marquise.”

Marquise Vanzengo of Charles County said he went to get some food from the drive thru of the fast food chain’s La Plata branch, and gave his order face-to-face directly to the worker who was standing outside in the drive-thru line greeting diners.

As he waited for his order, an employee called out the name of the animal, and Vanzengo was surprised to find out that the order of chicken strips, fries, and a drink was meant for him.

When he saw that his order label had the word “Monkeys” written on it, he went inside the restaurant to complain. The store owner and manager apologized to him, with the latter offering to refund the order. However, the owner said the employee wouldn’t be fired because he was a minor and said he misunderstood Vanzengo’s name.

Chick-fil-A: The experience is ‘unacceptable’

The chicken sandwich chain released a brief statement on the matter.

“This Chick-fil-A is independently franchised and operated. The franchisee of this restaurant has apologized to the guest. However, this experience does not meet our expectations and is unacceptable.”

Vanzengo says he was a regular customer at that particular Chick-fil-A location, but that he will no longer return in the future.

He posted his experience on social media, and while many expressed support, others said that the incident could have been the result of an honest mistake, pointing out that “Marquise” was not a common name and was easy to mishear.
