Why is Disney World closing Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser?
Disney is closing the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser after just over a year of operation. What prompted the decision?
Attention all Star Wars enthusiasts! If you’re planning to experience the awe-inspiring Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser, make sure to do so before September. Disney recently announced the closure of this attraction, which is located in the Epcot Resort Area and opened its doors just over a year ago in March 2022.
What is the Star Wars Galatic Starcuiser?
The attraction provides a two-night, live-action experience where guests choose the character they wish to play while traveling to outer space. However, some have criticized the price tag, which ranges from $4,800 to $6,000 per cabin. There are much more luxurious accommodations, and it could be that there was not enough interest to justify the upkeep and maintenance of the hotel.
Does the closing have to do with the ongoing fight between Disney and Florida’s governor?
Hard to say. Disney has sued Governor Ron DeSantis and other Florida lawmakers for what they see as an attempt to silence the company after they came out against the anti-LGBTQ legislation passed by the State House last year. According to recent reports, Disney has revealed its decision to halt a $1 billion investment into its Florida-based amusement parks. One of the projects scrapped or placed on hold temporarily is Lake Nona. This move is said to be a response to the state’s alleged efforts to reduce the significant level of control that the entertainment company holds over the surrounding areas of its parks. The company said that the decision was made given “changes in business conditions.”
While new attractions are likely to be stalled as the standoff between Florida and one of the state’s largest employers, the closure of the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser is likely a result of a lack of interest. Disney is known for crafting unique and tailored experiences for its fans, but if these offerings fail to attract a sufficient audience, it can have a negative impact on the company’s financials. It remains to be seen what will happen to the hotel workers, as Disney has not disclosed whether they will be transitioned to other roles within the business or if they will be let go.
