Why is Tyson Foods recalling dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets?

The USDA announced that Tyson is recalling 30,000 lbs. of frozen, fully cooked dinosaur-shaped chicken “Fun Nuggets” due to contamination by ‘metal pieces’.

The USDA announced on Saturday that Tyson Foods will voluntarily recall roughly 30,000 pounds of frozen, fully cooked dinosaur-shaped chicken “Fun Nuggets”. The move came out of an abundance of caution after customer complaints of foreign material in the product which is also known as Dino Chicken Nuggets.

While the number is limited, customers said that they found “metal pieces” in the nuggets. The agency’s Food Safety and Inspection Service in the release announcing the recall stated that company informed that so far, only one minor oral injury associated with consumption of this product has been reported.

Tyson said that it has received no additional reports of injury or illness from consumption of the kid-friendly chicken patty product. Also, that no other products are affected.

What dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets are being recalled?

The recall applies to Tyson brand fully cooked “Fun Nuggets” sold to retailers in 29-ounce packages that were produced at one location on 5 September 2023. The products affected have a use-by date of 4 September 2024 and the packages have the following lot codes:

  • 2483BRV0207
  • 2483BRV0208
  • 2483BRV0209
  • 2483BRV0210

Those that are subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-7211.” Customers that may have this product in their freezer can locate the number on the back of the package.

The affected dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets were shipped to distributors in nine states including Alabama, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin from where they were sent on to other locations at the retail level.

What should you do with recalled chicken nugget packages?

Consumers who have the recalled product in their freezers are urged not to consume them. Instead the FSIS advises that you should throw the package out or return the product to the point of purchase.
