Update:

Cities across the globe are decked out every year to celebrate the Christmas holiday. Some, however, take those efforts to the next level like Vilnius, Lithuania, which was named the 2025 European Capital of Christmas.

The award was granted by the EU’s Christmas Cities Network, which also recognizes a City and Village of Christmas each year, for efforts “to preserve and promote the Christmas spirit through cultural activities and initiatives that evoke traditions, citizen participation, heritage and festive values.” The other two honors went to Celje, Slovenia, and Noja, Spain, respectively, this year.

According to ‘Go Vilnius’, the official tourism website, the Lithuania capital has been celebrating Christmas since before it existed, with traditions that date back to winter solstice festivals. In particular, it was named the 2025 European Capital of Christmas for its “outstanding holiday traditions, commitment to community spirit, and creative festive experiences.”

While the celebrations in Vilnius draw on ancient traditions, they are also combined with innovation, “offering a holiday experience steeped in history and modern creativity.”

One such tradition is the city’s Christmas before Christmas, where people visit the ‘Christmas Bank’ to get a red pinecone which serves as Christmas currency, “a special kind that brings back childhood memories.”

The use of a pinecone is a nod to Vilnius’ status as a ‘green city’ which is on display as you explore the town from the city’s emphasis on sustainability, with energy-efficient lighting and eco-friendly decorations.

Visitors to the 2025 European Capital of Christmas will want to wander the cobblestone streets of UNESCO-listed Old Town which are illuminated by warm festive lights every year. You’ll also want to check out the Christmas market, go for a ride on the Christmas train and enjoy the ice rink.

Of course, you won’t want to miss the world-famous Christmas tree in Cathedral Square, which is on display from the end of November through 6 January.
