Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth insurance unit, was fatally shot on Wednesday morning according to police sources reported the NY Post and Bloomberg. The 50-year-old executive was shot in the chest outside the Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan.
The company was holding its Investor Day conference at the hotel. The firm canceled the rest of the event.
“We’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members, and as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today,” said UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty in a statment.
The suspect in the homicide has been described as a white male with a black face mask. Initial reports said that he was wearing a cream-colored jacket, but police photos released show him dressed in all black with black and white sneakers according to authorities. He also had a grey backpack according to officials.
There are reports that witnesses saw the suspect in the vicinity for some time before the murder. Thompson was taken to nearby Mount Sinai West Hospital where he was pronounced dead said the NYPD.
No arrests have been made and officials say that the investigation is ongoing into what authorities have described as a targeted attack.

Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and has held numerous leadership positions, according to his bio on the UnitedHealth website. He was named chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.
The firm’s headquarters are located in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Thompson has resided in the state for at least the past 26 years according to the Post. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1997 with a Bachelors of Business Administration, Accounting according to his LinkedIn page.
