Christmas getting closer, bringing colder weather and plenty of holiday cheer. While there’s still a while to go it’s never too early to start planning, especially if you’ll be traveling. Knowing what kind of weather to expect can make all the difference.
This year, Christmas Day falls on a Thursday, which means many Americans will enjoy a long weekend. But will it be a white Christmas?
As it does every year, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its weather outlook for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The 2025 forecast covers a wide range of winter conditions across the country — everything from snowy roads to clear, crisp skies.
According to the Almanac, snow is expected across much of the Northeast, Upper Midwest, Great Lakes region, eastern Ohio Valley and Alaska, giving those areas a good chance of waking up to a white Christmas.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest — including Washington and Oregon — should brace for stormy, rainy weather, while the Pacific Southwest could see showers later in the week.
If you’re spending Christmas in the South or Southeast, you can leave the snow shovel in the garage. Florida, Texas and Oklahoma are expected to have a mild, sunny holiday with little to no precipitation. Perfect for outdoor gatherings, backyard barbecues or beachside celebrations.
Wherever you find yourself this Christmas, you will likely have the day off work as one of the United States’ 11 officially recognized federal holidays. That means federal offices, schools, post offices, banks and libraries will be closed.
However Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, is not an official holiday so most Americans will work a regular day unless their employer offers early dismissal or a day off.
