Will there be a Season 2 of House of the Dragon?

Reviews of the new Game of Thrones prequel have been broadly positive, so what does this mean for hopes of a second series?

Update:
Will House of the Dragon be renewed for a Season 2?
HBO

With just one episode to go fans of the Game of Thrones mythos can be forgiven for being a little excited. After the disaster which was series nine of GoT, the prequel series House of the Dragon, has been an unabashed hit with praise being levied at all quarters. This was particularly true with episode eight which featured an extremely moving scene between Paddy Consadine’s King Viserys alongside Matt Smith’s Daemon, two brothers of the Targaryen family.

As is custom when a series of a show ends, people’s minds turn to the follow up. It has already been confirmed that a second series is underway. It was already greenlit a mere five days after the launch of series one.

We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming.

“Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV,” she added. “We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

Fans won’t have to go begging for another series of House of the Dragon like the classic British comedy character Alan Partridge did back in the ninties.

Without wishing to dip into spoilers, the next series will likely follow on with the second timeframe from series one following the children of Viserys. Aegon II and Aemond Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney and Ewan Mitchell, are expected to have an expanded role in season two as their characters age and develop.

When could season 2 be released?

Reports suggest that the filming could again take a year, with the VFX works likely to take around the same amount of time.

This means that the next season of House of the Dragon is unlikely to arrive before summer 2024 at the earliest. If we compare to Game of Thrones however, the original pumped out a series every year until the final two, eight and nine. Expect something similar for House of the Dragon.
