Will there be a white Christmas? Where is it expected to snow before the holiday?

Christmas is fast approaching and families across the country will be looking forward to gathering together and opening presents. Many will be hoping that when they wake up on December 25 and look out the window that the ground outside will be blanketed in a layer of snow for a postcard perfect white Christmas.

While it is still too early to say for certain, meteorologists have a pretty good idea which parts of the United States will have at least some snow on Christmas Day. Here’s a look at the predictions.

Will there be a white Christmas?

According to data collected by the National Centers for Environmental Information at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the places with the best chance of seeing a white Christmas are in Maine, Minnesota and Upstate New York and “practically anywhere in Idaho.” The Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia as well as the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are more than likely to have snow on the ground on Christmas Day.

Unfortunately for those on the West Coast, Gulf Coast and in the Deep South that are dreaming of a white Christmas, they’ll have to travel as the ground outside their homes most likely won’t have any snow to speak of on December 25.

Below is a map of the US Climate Normals from the climate monitoring agency based on data collected from ground weather stations on December 25 over three decades. White shows a probability of over 90 % while the gray areas represent a less than 10% probability for at least one inch of snow on the ground Christmas Day.

Where is it expected to snow before the Christmas holiday?

The Farmer’s Almanac has their own prediction too. According to ‘The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac’ in The Lower 48 the places that can expect a white Christmas are Alaska, the Heartland, the southern part of the High Plains (the part below I-70). Likewise, the Rockies will see snow on the ground on December 25 except in northern Arizona.

There is a chance for a white Christmas in the Ohio Valley, as well as the Intermountain region. The northern part of the High Plains “may experience a white Christmas.”
