The Social Security Administration distributes payments to more than 72 million beneficiaries of its program every month. The recipients are mostly retired workers and those who collect Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Payments are issued based on the recipients' birth dates. Those born between the 1st and 10th of each month get their payment on the second Wednesday of the month.

Those born between the 11th and 20th get their payment on the third Wednesday, and those born between the 21st and 31st get their payment on the fourth Wednesday.

Workers who retired before May 1997 as well as SSI recipients do not fall under this schedule, as they receive their deposits or checks during the first few days of the month, regardless of their birth date.

How much are average Social Security payments in 2025?

The exact amount a recipient gets will depend on each individual’s situation. However, the government agency has official estimates that offer a better picture for beneficiaries.

In 2025, average payments for a retired worker will be $1,976 per month after applying the 2.5% COLA increase.

Couples who both receive benefits can get up to $3,089 on average, while SSI recipients will now receive an average check of $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples filing jointly.
