Winter Weather Alert: Which states will see snow storms today, Sunday, December 3?

Around the country, cold temperatures and snow are creating dangerous conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued dozens of alerts. If you live in an affected area, it is advised that you take the proper precautions to stay safe. We have compiled all of the current alerts active for Sunday, 3 December, and for the full details check out the NWS website.

What is a Winter Weather Advisory?

The following areas are under Winter Weather Advisory, which the NWS issues “for any amount of freezing rain, or when 2 to 4 inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain), is expected to cause a significant inconvenience, but not serious enough to warrant a warning.” For the details, please review the information uploaded to the NWS website, which compiles and updates these alerts.

North Park, and Grand and Summit Counties Below 9000 Feet | Active through 11 PM MST Sunday.

Western Mosquito Range above 11000 feet and the Eastern Sawatch Mountains above 11000 feet | Active until 5 PM MST Sunday.

Upper Yampa River Basin | Active until 5 PM MST Sunday.

Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys | Active through 5 AM MST Monday.

MAINE 

Northeast Aroostook and Northwest Aroostook Counties | Active starting at 7 PM on Sunday through 7 PM EST Monday.

Coastal Hancock and Coastal Washington Counties | Active starting 4 PM on Sunday through 7 PM EST Monday.

What is a Winter Storm Warning?

The more severe alert issued by the NWS is a Winter Storm Warning, which includes “heavy snow of at least 6 inches in 12 hours, or at least 8 inches in 24 hours, is expected. It can also be issued if sleet accumulation will be at least half an inch.”

Travel disruptions are likely to occur due to heavy snow and blowing snow, which can lead to dangerous and challenging conditions. The eastern part of the United States can expect unsettled and mild weather with light rain, while most of the Northwest should anticipate wintry weather. Dry conditions are generally expected in the central and southwestern United States, with the central Plains and West experiencing below-average temperatures, while above-average temperatures will be observed elsewhere.
