You don’t need a passport for these 7 paradisaical getaways if you’re a U.S. citizen
While you don’t strictly need to show your passport on entry at these destinations, it’s recommended to carry some form of Id.

Even if you don’t have a passport, or if the one you have has expired, there are a number of locations that US citizens can travel to without the need to produce your travel documents on entry.
However, it’s recommended to carry some form of ID with you, such as a government-issued ID with up-to-date photo or a certified birth certificate - you may or may not be asked to produce them by border control.
There are four countries which US citizens can freely travel to and from from the United States without the need to show a passport as they are classified as US territories.

No passport required for these four US territories
The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, situated 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, has been a US territory since 1898 and Puerto Ricans have had US citizenship for over a century.
Flights from Miami International Airport to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport take around two hours 20 minutes. For those traveling from the US and vice versa, it is considered domestic travel, the equivalent of flying to another state so no passport is required.

Likewise for Guam, which also became a unincorporated US territory following the Spanish–American War at the end of the 19th Century. Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport opened in 1943, it is the island’s only civil airport and serves around four million passengers per year. No passport is needed for US citizens traveling from the mainland.
The US Virgin Islands is another tropical location which is a popular travel destination for Americans, and you won’t need to show a passport on entry. Located 2,270 miles to the southeast of the mainland and east of Puerto Rico, it has two airports - Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport (Saint Croix) and Cyril E. King International Airport (Saint Thomas). Direct flights from Miami to Saint Thomas take just under three hours.

Destinations where US citizens can fly to without a passport
- Guam
- Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
- Puerto Rico
- US Virgin Islands
And finally the Northern Mariana Islands is another remote location where US citizens will not be asked to produce their passport. The commonwealth, consisting of 14 islands in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, is accessible by plane with three carriers operating flights (United, T’way Air and Jeju Air).
There are three Freely Associated States where US permanent residents are required to show their passport at border control: the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau.
