A Gears of War movie and animated show are in the works at Netflix

Dust off the lancer, as an adaptation of The Coallition's game is in its early stages to be adapted to live-action and animation produced by Netflix.

Update:
A Gears of War movie and animated show are in the works at Netflix

As a way to celebrate the anniversary of the release of Gears of War, The Coallition and Netflix have announced a “live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series” related to the franchise.

Through its official Twitter account, Netflix made a brief announcement about what's to come about these adaptations of the video game originally developed by Epic Games on the Xbox 360, while also mentioning "the potential for more stories to follow!"

For now, and according to information from The Hollywood Reporter, the film still has no release date, director, or even producers in charge of this new attempt to bring Sera, the COG, and other symbolic elements of Gears of War's rich lore to the big and small screen.

Gears of War movie: a project years in the making

This is not the first time an attempt has been made to adapt the Gears of War story to film. The first attempt dates back to 2007 when New Line obtained the rights, although not much progress was made in its pre-production. Shortly after, during the Gears of War 4 launch stream in October 2016, it was announced that Universal was in the early stages of attempting a new adaptation of the franchise, of which screenwriter F. Scott Frazier and producer Dylan Clark were even reported to be part of the project, but after a few years, it never made it past the script stage.

The future of Gears (of War)

In terms of video games, the franchise has been silent in recent years. The last release on console and PC was in Gears 5 -sans "of War"-, which saw a revamp to the formula, embracing the open-world concept in several of its levels. Other spin-offs have come bearing the franchise name, with Gears of War Tactics being the most recent, taking the Gears conflict to another perspective. Recently, The Coalition showed a tech demo called The Cavern, where it demonstrated the benefits of Unreal Engine 5 on the Xbox Series X.
