William Allen
Born in 1983, William grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he spent most of his childhood playing soccer in the garden and Sensible Soccer on the computer. He often added home-made commentary to both. After completing a bachelor’s degree in modern languages and a master’s in translation, William moved to Spain in 2010, joining Diario AS in 2013. He later left to work as a translator for the Real Madrid and LaLiga websites, before returning to AS in 2016. He mainly covers soccer, focusing on the Premier League, LaLiga, the Champions League, the Liga MX and MLS. On occasion, he also dabbles in American sports, general news and entertainment. William is fascinated by the language of sport – particularly the under-appreciated art of translating cliché-speak – and embraces niche soccer geekdom. For example, his specialist subject on Mastermind would be Premier League goal-net designs, 1992-2000.
