The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - how to get Epona

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom allows you to get the legendary horse, Epona, to accompany you throughout this new adventure, but there’s a catch.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - how to get Epona

There’s plenty of different ways to travel throughout Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, specially now that there’s not only the huge surface map, but the sky islands and The Depths as well. But while you may build flying machines, tanks, and even some insane mechs to traverse the lands, nothing beats riding on a trusty horse. And there’s no better horse than Epona.

The legendary horse from the Zelda series has been a faithful companion of Link and players all over the world ever since the release of Ocarina of Time, and just as it happened with Breath of the Wild you’ll be able to unlock her and keep her with you. However, there’s only two ways to do this, and while they’re relatively easy to do it’s not something that will be available for everyone.

How to get Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

There’s two different ways of unlocking Epona in Tears of the Kingdom:

  • You can summon her by using the Super Smash Bros. Link or Twilight Princess Link Amiibos. This option is made available after completing the Great Sky Island tutorial area and landing in Hyrule. You simply need to scan one of the Amiibo figures on your controller and Epona will be summoned into your game. You can then bring her to a stable and register her in.

  • If you have a save file from Breath of the Wild, you’ll be able to find the trusty horse in the New Serenne Stable. Just follow the road Northwest of Lookout Landing, which is the direction where the game pushes you to go first to follow the story. Talk to the stable owner there and Epona should be available for you to mount and ride.

Alternatively, if you unlocked Epona in Breath of the Wild and you still have that save file on your console, she should already be registered alongside your old horses from that game when you visit any stable in the game.
