2024 Pokémon World Championships: All you need to know about the event

Aloha Alola!

The time has come to meet the best Pokémon players in various categories. After hosting the tournaments in London in 2022 and Yokohama in 2023, The Pokémon Company has decided to return to Hawaii for the first time since 2012. Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about this tournament.

What is the Pokémon World Championship?

The Pokémon World Championships is an annual tournament that has been bringing together the best Pokémon players since 2004. The tournament began with a focus on the Trading Card Game, and was expanded to include the video game in 2008 with the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Since then, other titles in the franchise have joined the event, such as Pokkén Tournament DX (though the game will be retired in 2022), as well as Pokémon GO and Pokémon Unite. Access to the tournament will be by invitation, based on the scores achieved by participants in various regional tournaments.

The event includes opening and closing ceremonies, where, in addition to welcoming competitors and awarding winners, announcements are made about Pokémon and its titles. In previous years, the event was preceded by a Pokémon Presents, which featured announcements related to all of the franchise’s games, but this did not change the fact that the most important announcements were made during these ceremonies.

When and where will the 2024 Pokémon World Championships take place?

The 2024 Pokémon World Championships will be held this year in Honolulu, Hawaii from August 16-18. The Hawai’i Convention Center will be the venue of choice. If you can’t make it, but want to watch the tournaments and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, you can follow all the action on Pokémon’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

What games will be competing in the tournament?

The 2024 Pokémon World Championships will crown champions in Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, Pokémon GO, and Pokémon Unite. The first two have three different categories: Junior, Senior, and Master. Pokémon GO has no age limit, and Pokémon Unite is the only one played in teams.
