2XKO Arcane Pack: Price, contents, and why this faces backlash from fans

Riot’s new fighting game leans on microtransactions early, with exclusive Arcane cosmetics only available through an expensive bundle.

2XKO
Update:

2XKO is Riot Games’ upcoming fighting title, and it’s already in early access. And like many free-to-play games, the game comes with some packs to unlock cosmetics to play with, but to the surprise of few, Riot Games has once again inflated the prices if we want access to Arcane-inspired cosmetics.

Through its social media channels, Riot announced that the 2XKO’s Arcane-themed Ultra Starter Edition is available to buy for $99.99. The package includes three Mythic-tier skins for Vi, Jinx, and Ekko, with alternate colors, eight champion unlock tokens, a player card, an exclusive finisher, avatar cosmetic bundles, and 5,000 KO points (in-game currency). When added up separately, the contents are indeed worth more than $100; however, there is no other way for fans interested in Arcane to get the skins, so fans have reacted.

The (expensive) free-to-play factor

It comes as no surprise that Riot Games has implemented microtransactions in its new title. It’s something it has done since League of Legends, and Valorant has also had them as a shooter since its launch. And this is not the first time Riot has overpriced a skin, just remember last year’s Faker $500 skin bundle. However, it is striking that players have to deal with this type of monetization so early in the game’s life cycle, especially when it is in early access. Even more so when it comes to capitalizing on the success of the Arcane animation and the fact that a group of fans cannot access these characters by any other means.

It is also worth mentioning that this package is the most expensive version available for the game. The standard version, the starter bundle, costs $29.99 and includes unlock tokens, a player card, and enough in-game currency to buy one legendary skin from the shop.
