A ‘Backrooms’ sequel is already being planned after the film’s surprise box office success
The follow-up has not been officially greenlit, but its director is reportedly moving ahead with early development.
‘Backrooms’ has become a box office hit, defying all expectations—including those of its production company, A24. With a global box office haul of $118 million in its opening weekend and a promising future ahead for its director, Ken Parsons, the idea of a sequel was certainly not out of the question.
According to information published by Deadline, a sequel is already in development—or at least its director is already planning one. The project has not yet been formally greenlit, nor are there any details regarding casting, but the intention to continue the franchise is clear.
Parsons is reportedly seeking a new screenwriter to help shape the sequel. This points to the departure of Will Soodik, the sole credited writer on the first film, who completed earlier drafts initially developed by Roberto Patino. While Backrooms was widely praised for its unsettling atmosphere and visual identity, much of the film’s impact came from its wordless sequences, where the focus rested almost entirely on navigating its liminal, oppressive environments.
The Internet phenomenon that made it to the big screen
‘Backrooms’ started out as a YouTube “found footage” that captivated millions of young people around the world. To the surprise of many, Hollywood knew how to capitalize on this trend and bring it to the big screen with the help of its original creator. We may now be witnessing the birth of a highly prolific horror film franchise for its production company.
Beyond cinema, the director’s success has also drawn attention from the gaming community. Parsons has previously expressed interest in adapting Portal, the cult-classic title developed by Valve. While such a project remains hypothetical, sustained success with the ‘Backrooms’ franchise could strengthen his position should that opportunity ever materialize.
