A blow to gamers’ wallets: PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal prices rise worldwide

The price adjustment affects the entire PlayStation 5 family, setting new official prices at $649.99 for the standard PS5 and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro.

Sony has implemented a new price increase for the PlayStation 5 family worldwide, and the impact is being felt across its entire hardware lineup. The PS5 Digital Edition now costs $599.99, the PS5 Pro has risen to $899.99, and the PS5 now costs $649.99. The move represents a significant price increase at a delicate moment in the console’s sales cycle, with millions of users still waiting to make the leap to the current generation and a market that is increasingly sensitive to the final purchase price.

The result is that entering the PlayStation ecosystem today costs significantly more than it did yesterday. In an industry where hardware prices typically drop over time—or at least stabilize—this decision once again puts one of the undisputed leaders in the video game industry in an awkward position with its community.

A disheartening outlook for the gaming industry

Anyone hoping for a price cut or a more favorable time to buy a PS5 now faces the opposite scenario. The Digital model, intended as the most accessible entry point to this generation, has jumped to a much higher price point. The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, is approaching a psychologically daunting price threshold for a home console. And the Portal, marketed as a complement to the ecosystem, has seen its appeal diminished by the price hike to $249.99. This is a significant and widespread price increase across all product lines, set to take effect on April 2.

The problem isn’t just the price itself, but how it’s perceived. A price hike like this forces consumers to reevaluate the value of each device and makes it harder to justify compared to other gaming options—from PCs to the secondhand market, other consoles, or simply waiting for things to change. In the short term, the price hike may curb impulse purchases and make it harder for new users to get started. In the medium term, it also pushes Sony to more clearly justify what each tier of its lineup offers. Because it’s one thing to sell a leading console, and quite another to do so after raising its price in a market that has long been watching every dollar more closely.
