A look at the first cosplay showcase at the Pokémon World Championships
A new tradition begins in which fans pay tribute to the human characters from the Pokémon universe.
With almost 30 years of existence, Pokémon has a vast repertoire of characters. We’re not just talking about the pocket monsters that have accompanied us in different regions, but also the trainers, companions, rivals, and villains in this universe. On this occasion, the 2025 Pokémon World Championships had a special and different moment for those fans who, beyond being spectators of the competitions or interested in the harvest, could do something else: a cosplay presentation that opened a new chapter in the event.
Cosplay took center stage on the first day
On the first day of the Pokémon World Championships, one of the events that closed the day for attendees was the Cosplay Showcase. Weeks before the competition began, spectators who had a cosplay to share with the world were invited to register. However, there was one important rule: the character had to be a human character that had appeared in one of the Pokémon games. And boy, did people comply.
Around 40 people took to the stage, representing a wide variety of characters, from Red and Blue and several Ashs to gym leaders such as Grusha and Larry and villains ranging from Team Rocket Grunts, Jessie and James to Giovanni himself. And it wasn’t just individual or pair cosplay; an entire family took to the stage representing characters from the first season of the anime.
Although at other events these presentations are more like a competition, on this occasion, it was a first spark that, if repeated in the coming years, could become a new tradition within the World Championships.
