A new ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie by Peter Jackson has been confirmed, with Gollum as the protagonist
Warner Bros. has confirmed “The Lord of the Rings” is coming back to theaters with a new story centered around Gollum.
Tolkien’s legendary saga is coming back to the big screen. The development of a new movie from the universe of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has been confirmed, with it focusing on the story of one of the most important characters in the plot: Gollum. The studio has already revealed that it will be called ‘The Hunt of Gollum’. Andy Serkis will not only return to the role as the protagonist, but will also get behind the cameras as director. Although it still does not have a release date, Warner Bros. intends to bring it to theaters sometime in 2026.
Jackson and Andy Serkis, hand in hand in the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie
Peter Jackson will also participate in the film as a producer, along with his usual scriptwriters: Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Their participation will influence “every step” of the film, meaning that they’ll actually be involved in the production and not only supervising. “It is an honour and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker — Gollum! ,” Jackson shares in his first statements after the news were unveiled.
Serkis confirmed that the film will return to filming in New Zealand, the setting that gave life to the previous films. Its production is still in the early stages of script development, although its writers anticipate that it will “explore storylines yet to be told.” It is clear that for Warner Bros it is a key element of its roadmap for the coming years.
The films will take a different path than Amazon in terms of the universe they are building on the small screen. ‘The Rings of Power’ will continue as an independent branch within the enormous world woven by Tolkien and will not have any type of impact on what will be seen in the major feature film productions. In fact, Jackson has stressed on many occasions that he is not part of the Prime Video series project.
